Notes
What clip I'm watching, and how it shows sexuality.
How the characters show stereotypes, by the way they act, their dialogue.
How they show feminine and masculine traits

about the characters that show more masculine traits, characters that show the most power and dominance in the clip ( woman in the leather jacket, driving a digger and the man who stood in the foreground in the barn, in the front when harm could be caused, has power, shows he is a strong character)

Characters that show more feminine traits (woman who is wearing a coat and dress in the barn, and the man wearing the pink t-shirt)

Props (guns, spades, diggers, items that could causes danger for the characters), lighting, location (woods, barn, dirt) very masculine setting.

Sound, loud noises that could show if it's a dominant scene for males

Notes

Gender clip>> primeval

Sound
the music is conveying the emotions of the scenes
When the woman is talking to the man it is almost sad and eery - a feminine association due to emotional scene
However when he starts walking away the music starts to build with suspense and danger which conveys to the audience that something important is about to happen
In the tiger scene the main sound is the growl of the tiger, the whir of the digger and the man's voice, however there is still the music in the background that builds the tension and makes it seem to be fast and happening quite quickly
When the man is falling down the tightrope the sound of a woman's voice making an 'ahhh' sound in an opera like voice helps with the suspense
When they are discussing the man ripped in half it starts off silent with the sound of chirping birds and then builds with a faster paced music and mystery type sound when making their plan
When the woman is manipulating the guy with his life's work it is silent as if she is the one in control but the music picks up when the man takes a gun and has the upper hand, suspense to see what will happen and smoothed out on the sound when her colleagues (three of them) hold the man with the gun at gunpoint making him surrender

Location / setting
The barn with the dogs is associated with a masculine area - 'a man's best friend' >> urban setting
The digger is associated as a masculine job to do
The grassy outdoors setting gives a rugged dirt feel to the scene which is usually associated with a man 'in his element' and where women find men attractive due to thief strength and knowledge with the outdoor world
When in the air it gives it a suspense almost calm flight feel to it as if he is waiting to touch down and the action to start over - woman association as escape is a typical stereotype of a woman running away

Costume
Leather is usually associated with men but the style of the leather jacket and colour connotes that she is a feminine character but a strong persona

Props
Gun is a way of showing a mans dominance within a certain situation but the older man has an older gun and is overruled with the young characters who have sleek modern guns - young over old

Camera angles
High angle looking down upon the woman on the floor conveys how she is less dominant>> vulnerable
Frame shot- man in the middle further forward than his 'sidekicks' either side of him
Over shoulder shot when woman walks away from man
Motion shot when man gets to the top of the tree which shows his dominance over the scene below
Close up on the man sliding down the tight rope shows his fear and calculating expression as if trying to plan out what he is going to do when he reaches the ground

How does this clip represent sexuality?

Opening paragraph for essay question

This clip represents many different variances of sexualities that are commonly seen within the everyday media; the traditional and the post masculine stereotypes. For example the blonde girl could be seen as masculine due to the fact that she is operating a digger and that she has short hair and wears jeans and a leather jacket, however she is is classed as a post masculine female as she does all of that but she also wears makeup, her leather jacket is very low cut showing her cleavage, her jeans are skintight showing her womanly shaped legs and her haircut is sleek and flowing in a womanly way so there is an argument with her character. Furthermore, the man wearing the cowboy hat is wearing a pink t-shirt that traditionally is seen as a feminine colour which differs from the male stereotype which means he is a post masculine male as he acts like a man through body language, his voice is deep like a man, he wears a styled beard and mustache which reinforces that he is not homosexual but just differs from the traditional stereotype. Therefore this means, this clip questions the sexuality of the characters as there are many different angles and interpretations you can see them in depending upon your viewpoint.

First paragraph
Traditional stereotypes: blonde man, brown haired woman, man in barn with gun
-mise en scene
-cinematography

Second paragraph
Post masculine stereotypes: blonde woman, man in cowboy hat
-mise en scene
-cinematography

Third paragraph
Why they differ or conform to stereotypes

Fourth paragraph
The importance of the saber tooth tiger >> masculine

Conclusion
How the modern media plays upon what we are used to using both traditional and post masculine to their advantage within tv dramas

  • Is how the stereotypical woman is protryaed "I'm already late for my hairdressers appointment."
  • Greed
  • Shop worker is quite camp

  • Demanding
  • Shop worker wants the highest amount he can get

  • No music when the man is fixing the alarm
  • Cons
  • Match on action, when the two men in the shop are talking about the reward
  • Close up/ extreme close ups of the ring
  • Medium shot at the beginnging to show the three different types of character in the shop
  • Blonde woman- How men want women to look, takes care of her appearence, looks like she has a lot of money, might use her looks to get what she wants
  • Brown haired lady- Does'nt have a lot of money, finding an expensive outfit for her daughters wedding, plain clothing, has'nt taken as much care with her appearence (hair tied back, not styled like the blonde womans), the poor one out of the three characters
  • Man in the shop- Could be camp (works in a womans dress shop), cares for appearences, greedy, well groomed, protrayed for the audience to see him as posh.
  • Man in the dress shop makes a comment "Its sevwn hundred, it is at the lower end of our current stock." Once he knows the brown haired woman does'nt have much money, he is'nt interested
  • Does a little jump when the woman says she'll take the dress, non masuline
  • A lot of close up shots
  • The hustlers are always shown in the foreground of the shot
  • Shows they have power
  • Older man uses drink to get the other man drunk, possibly to get him on his side

Within the first scene the audience are shown three characters who all represent gender in different ways.
The first characters who your attention draws to is a lady with blonde hair, she is shown as a character who might use her looks to get what she wants. You can she  takes good care of her appearance and is shown how a stereotypical woman would be portrayed, with blonde styled hair and fit fitting clothes. She always makes a comment which people often stereotype women with, "I'm already late for my hairdressers appointment." Because of the way she dresses she could be seen as a sex object and is how men want women to look. She also pretends to buy a black dress, which is shown as a stereotype for most women.

The next character the audience see is a woman with brown hair, un like the first woman she is shown with plain clothing, and hasn't taken much care with her appearance. Out of the three characters she has the less amount of money, and is only shopping in the high class outlet to find an expensive outfit for her daughters wedding.

The man is the sequence is shown as a quite camp character, I can see this when he gets excited and jumps for joy when the woman agrees to buy one of his dresses and also because he works in a woman's dress shop. He isn't shown as a masculine characters and he has more feminine traits.
The man is also shown as a well groomed character and appears to be rather posh. He also make a slight bitchy comment to the brown haired lady in his store "It's seven hundred, it is at the lower end of our current stock." This shows the man as a more feminine character, as males don't often part take in bitchiness and also makes him seem more superficial. He is also shown as greedy as he wants the highest amount of money he can get for a missing ring and he only cares for appearances.

I think all of the three characters that are shown have a reference to do with money. The blonde woman being a con artist, only interested in making huge amounts of money.
I think the brown haired lady has the least amount of money out of the three characters, possibly being a working mother who spends the majority of her money on her children.
I think the man in the sequence is greedy for money and isn't interested in anyone who has less money than himself.

The other characters shown in the sequence are a middle aged man and a man a bit older than him.
They're shown drinking whisky, smoking and wearing suits, which is what people think the stereotypical upper class business/con man does.
Within one of the shots the older man uses drink to get the other male with him drunk, this could possibly be to get him on his side, which would show a clever and cunning side to his behaviour.

The sequence shows a wide range of different shots and camera angles.
There is the use of match on action when the two men in the shop are taking about the reward. This shot could of been used because neither of the characters are in control and both obtain the same amount of power.
There is close up and extreme close up shots of the diamond ring, this is showing the ring has significance to the sequence and is important to all of the different characters.
There is a medium shot at the beginning to show the three characters in shop, to show they are all relevant to the sequence.
The hustlers are always shown in the foreground of the shots, showing they have power.

The music playing through the sequence is a type of jazz music. The music has a faster pace when the blonde lady is looking for her ring, this could be to show the ring is important and there is a panic when it can't be found.
There isn't any music when the man is fixing the alarm, this could be because the alarm is shown as an important object.
