Notes

Gender clip>> primeval

Sound
the music is conveying the emotions of the scenes
When the woman is talking to the man it is almost sad and eery - a feminine association due to emotional scene
However when he starts walking away the music starts to build with suspense and danger which conveys to the audience that something important is about to happen
In the tiger scene the main sound is the growl of the tiger, the whir of the digger and the man's voice, however there is still the music in the background that builds the tension and makes it seem to be fast and happening quite quickly
When the man is falling down the tightrope the sound of a woman's voice making an 'ahhh' sound in an opera like voice helps with the suspense
When they are discussing the man ripped in half it starts off silent with the sound of chirping birds and then builds with a faster paced music and mystery type sound when making their plan
When the woman is manipulating the guy with his life's work it is silent as if she is the one in control but the music picks up when the man takes a gun and has the upper hand, suspense to see what will happen and smoothed out on the sound when her colleagues (three of them) hold the man with the gun at gunpoint making him surrender

Location / setting
The barn with the dogs is associated with a masculine area - 'a man's best friend' >> urban setting
The digger is associated as a masculine job to do
The grassy outdoors setting gives a rugged dirt feel to the scene which is usually associated with a man 'in his element' and where women find men attractive due to thief strength and knowledge with the outdoor world
When in the air it gives it a suspense almost calm flight feel to it as if he is waiting to touch down and the action to start over - woman association as escape is a typical stereotype of a woman running away

Costume
Leather is usually associated with men but the style of the leather jacket and colour connotes that she is a feminine character but a strong persona

Props
Gun is a way of showing a mans dominance within a certain situation but the older man has an older gun and is overruled with the young characters who have sleek modern guns - young over old

Camera angles
High angle looking down upon the woman on the floor conveys how she is less dominant>> vulnerable
Frame shot- man in the middle further forward than his 'sidekicks' either side of him
Over shoulder shot when woman walks away from man
Motion shot when man gets to the top of the tree which shows his dominance over the scene below
Close up on the man sliding down the tight rope shows his fear and calculating expression as if trying to plan out what he is going to do when he reaches the ground

How does this clip represent sexuality?

Opening paragraph for essay question

This clip represents many different variances of sexualities that are commonly seen within the everyday media; the traditional and the post masculine stereotypes. For example the blonde girl could be seen as masculine due to the fact that she is operating a digger and that she has short hair and wears jeans and a leather jacket, however she is is classed as a post masculine female as she does all of that but she also wears makeup, her leather jacket is very low cut showing her cleavage, her jeans are skintight showing her womanly shaped legs and her haircut is sleek and flowing in a womanly way so there is an argument with her character. Furthermore, the man wearing the cowboy hat is wearing a pink t-shirt that traditionally is seen as a feminine colour which differs from the male stereotype which means he is a post masculine male as he acts like a man through body language, his voice is deep like a man, he wears a styled beard and mustache which reinforces that he is not homosexual but just differs from the traditional stereotype. Therefore this means, this clip questions the sexuality of the characters as there are many different angles and interpretations you can see them in depending upon your viewpoint.
